Nasdaq rose 0.6%
The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.62% on Tuesday to close at 26269.23, extending its recent run of gains despite weakness in semiconductor shares. The tech-heavy index has now advanced 1.54% over the past week and 1.47% over the past month, building on a strong second quarter that has left it up 13.02% year-to-date.
The index remains in bullish technical territory, trading 3.04% below its 52-week high of 27093.9 set earlier this year and 27.21% above its 52-week low of 20650.13. It finished the session above both its 50-day moving average of 26119.88 and its 200-day moving average of 23845.62, a configuration that typically signals sustained upward momentum.
U.S. markets broadly outperformed their international counterparts. The S&P 500 added 0.38% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.29%, while European bourses declined across the board. The DAX fell 0.99%, the CAC 40 dropped 0.91%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 shed 0.67%. Asian markets showed sharper divergences: the Hang Seng jumped 1.33%, but the Nikkei tumbled 2.79% and the KOSPI plunged 6.37%. The Shanghai Composite lost 1.85%.
According to a headline from Investor's Business Daily, the Nasdaq managed to rise "despite tumble among chip leaders," with Apple pacing a rally in the so-called Magnificent Seven group of mega-cap technology stocks. A separate headline from FXEmpire noted that chip stocks slid "despite TSMC beat," suggesting some disconnection between individual company results and sector performance. The evidence pack offers no confirmed catalyst for the day's move, and the news headlines present conflicting signals rather than a clear narrative.
The session illustrates the index's resilience in 2026, with double-digit year-to-date returns and consistent positioning above key technical levels. What remains unclear is whether chip-sector weakness represents a temporary rotation or something more persistent, and whether the divergence between U.S. and Asian markets will narrow or widen in coming sessions.
