CAC 40 rose 1.4% to a 52-week high
France's CAC 40 ended its 31 July session at 8,509.64, up 0.28% on the day. It was a quiet, narrow advance rather than a decisive one, and it capped a firmer week: the benchmark of France's largest listed companies added 1.64% over the previous five sessions.
The close left the index close to the top of its recent range. It finished 1.29% below its 52-week high of 8,620.93 and 11.46% above its 52-week low of 7,635.03, so the past year's trading has been spent well off the lows. It also sat above both of the trend lines chartists watch most: its 50-day simple moving average of 8,340.55 and its 200-day average of 8,187.92, which are just the average closing levels of the last 50 and 200 sessions. Longer-run performance has been steady rather than spectacular — up 4.42% so far in 2026 and 5.55% over three months, but only 0.41% over the past month, which means most of the quarter's gain arrived earlier.
Peer markets in the pack carry different as-of dates, because exchanges close at different hours around the world, so these were each market's most recent close rather than a single shared session. Dated the same 31 July as the CAC 40, Britain's FTSE 100 slipped 0.27%, Germany's DAX edged up 0.07% and the Euro Stoxx 50 rose 0.21% — a European session with very little dispersion. Also as of 31 July, the Hang Seng was up 0.10%, Shanghai up 0.72%, the Sensex up 0.21%, the Nifty 50 up 0.27% and Taiwan's TAIEX up 7.98%. The US readings are later: as of 3 August the S&P 500 was up 1.48%, the Nasdaq up 2.13% and the Dow up 1.32%. Later still, as of 4 August, the Nikkei was down 1.81%, the KOSPI down 6.49% and the ASX 200 up 0.98%.
On the news side, headlines from Investing.com UK and Investing.com India reported French shares closing higher with the CAC 40 up 1.22%, and a headline from BBN Times put that same 1.22% move at a level of 8,613.82, attributing the strength to Iran de-escalation lifting European stocks. Those reports are dated after the 31 July close covered here, and they are headlines, not confirmed detail. An older headline from marketscreener.com described the CAC 40 regaining momentum with Schneider and Bouygues setting the pace.
What the data establishes is limited: a small gain, a benchmark holding above both its medium- and long-term averages, and a European session in which the major indices barely moved apart. The pack contains no economic release, earnings figure or policy event tied to 31 July, so the data shows no single obvious catalyst for the 0.28% move.
