Dow rose 0.5%
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.32% on 3 August 2026, closing at 53,178.41. That single session accounted for most of the blue-chip benchmark's 1.85% advance over the past week, and it left the index measurably stronger than it had been a month earlier, when the trailing one-month return stood at just 0.53%.
The closing level was itself the index's 52-week high, leaving it 0.0% below that peak and 20.95% above the 52-week low of 43,968.64. The Dow finished above both of the moving averages traders watch most often — the 50-day average of 51,768.93 and the 200-day average of 49,084.99 — which are simply the mean closing prices over those windows and are commonly read as short- and long-term trend markers. Over three months the index was up 7.43%, and 10.64% for the year to date.
Peer markets in the evidence pack were not all measured on the same date, so their moves describe each market's most recent close rather than one shared session. The other two big US gauges were dated 3 August alongside the Dow: the S&P 500 rose 1.48% and the Nasdaq 2.13%, both ahead of the Dow's gain. European readings were dated 31 July, and were mixed and small — the FTSE 100 down 0.27%, the DAX up 0.07%, the CAC 40 up 0.28% and the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.21%. Asian readings were split across dates: the Nikkei fell 1.81% and the KOSPI dropped 6.49% on 4 August, while the ASX 200 rose 0.98% on the same date; the Hang Seng (0.1%), Shanghai (0.72%), TAIEX (7.98%), Sensex (0.21%) and Nifty 50 (0.27%) were all dated 31 July.
On the news side, a headline from TradingKey reported that the Dow jumped over 700 points, that the Nasdaq rose for a third day with cloud firms leading, and that Amazon's market capitalisation topped $3 trillion. The Globe and Mail carried a general market wrap for 3 August. Older items in the pack were structural rather than day-specific: the WSJ reported roughly six weeks ago that Alphabet would replace Verizon in the index, a change also covered by Business Insider. None of these are confirmed here beyond what the headlines assert.
What the pack establishes is the shape of the move, not its cause. The Dow closed at a fresh 52-week high, above both major moving averages, and lagged the broader S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq on the same date — a pattern consistent with the technology weighting implied by the cloud-sector headline, though the data does not confirm that link. Beyond the reported headlines, the evidence shows no single obvious catalyst for the day's gain.
