Nifty 50 rose 0.9%
India's Nifty 50 ended its most recent recorded session, on 31 July 2026, at 24,383.6, a gain of 0.27% on the day. It was a quiet finish to a busy stretch: the index had added 2.59% over the preceding week, which makes the day's move look less like a fresh push and more like the tail end of one.
The longer arc is more mixed than that week suggests. The Nifty closed above its 50-day moving average of 23,903.88 — the average closing level of the last 50 sessions, a common shorthand for the short-term trend — but still below its 200-day average of 24,779.46, the equivalent measure for the longer trend. It sat 7.39% under its 52-week high of 26,328.55 and 9.19% above its 52-week low of 22,331.4. Over one month the index was up 0.86% and over three months up 1.61%, yet for the calendar year to date it remained down 6.68%. A good week has not undone a poor year.
Peer markets in the pack are not all measured on the same day, so they describe a sequence rather than one shared session. In the same 31 July session, the Sensex rose 0.21%, Hang Seng added 0.1%, Shanghai gained 0.72% and TAIEX jumped 7.98%, while in Europe the FTSE 100 slipped 0.27%, the DAX edged up 0.07%, the CAC 40 rose 0.28% and the Euro Stoxx 50 added 0.21%. US markets' latest reading is dated 3 August, with the S&P 500 up 1.48%, the Nasdaq up 2.13% and the Dow up 1.32%. The freshest closes come from 4 August: the Nikkei fell 1.81%, Australia's ASX 200 rose 0.98%, and the KOSPI dropped 6.49%.
The headlines gathered alongside the data mostly describe a later Indian session than the 31 July close above, and they should be read as reports rather than as confirmed record. Reuters reported that the Nifty and Sensex diverged following the launch of a new auction mechanism, and The New Indian Express reported that a new closing auction session produced an unusually wide gap between the two indices' closing prints. GujaratSamachar English reported that the Sensex gained 0.7% while the Nifty50 rose 1.60% under those new rules, Moneycontrol reported a fourth consecutive advancing day, and Upstox attributed a close at five-month highs to a fall in crude prices.
For the session actually in the data, the pack offers no single obvious catalyst behind a 0.27% move. What it does establish is narrower: a modest up day, a strong week, a market above its short-term average but below its long-term one, and a year still in the red.
