CAC 40 edged up 0.0% to a 52-week high
France's CAC 40 barely moved on 5 August 2026, closing 0.03% higher at 8,669.3. On most days a change that small would be the least interesting thing about a session. Here it was not, because the index's own figures put that near-flat finish exactly on its 52-week high, 0% below the peak of the past year.
That leaves the Paris benchmark well above its main trend lines. It sat 13.26% above its 52-week low of 7,654.25, and above both its 50-day moving average of 8,366.76 and its 200-day average of 8,194.48 — the smoothed price lines traders use as rough shorthand for the medium- and long-term trend. The gains behind that position were steady rather than sudden: up 3.1% over the past week, 2.76% over a month, 6.86% over three months and 6.38% so far this year.
The peer markets in the pack are not all drawn from the same session, so they do not describe one synchronised day. Among the indices whose latest close also carried the 5 August date, direction was split: the Dow rose 0.75%, the FTSE 100 added 0.08%, India's Sensex gained 0.19% and the Nifty 50 crept up 0.04%, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.14%, the Nasdaq lost 0.64%, Germany's DAX fell 0.29% and the Euro Stoxx 50 eased 0.15%. Paris edged higher, in other words, while the region's two other big gauges did not.
The Asian readings are a session older, dated 4 August. On that day the KOSPI jumped 1.62% and Australia's ASX 200 climbed 1.4%, with Shanghai up 0.33% and the Nikkei up 0.32%; Taiwan's TAIEX was almost unchanged at 0.06% lower, and the Hang Seng dropped 0.6%.
The headlines bundled with the pack point at recent strength rather than at this particular close. Marketscreener ran a piece a day earlier headlined as a new record for the CAC 40, and Investing.com reported French stocks finishing higher with the index up 0.61%, while its India edition reported a 1.22% advance. A report from bbntimes described a 0.92% Paris rally led by Schneider Electric and chip names, and Ideal Investisseur reported that Kering fell nearly 3% to become the index's worst performer. None of those figures belongs to the session just wrapped.
What the pack establishes is narrow: the CAC 40 ended a quiet day at the very top of its 52-week range with its longer-run gains intact. It names no driver for the move, carries no constituent-level detail for the session itself, and offers nothing to confirm the record framing beyond the headline that used it.
