Dow rose 0.8% to a 52-week high
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 54,491.84 on 5 August 2026, a gain of 0.75% on the day. That close was also the highest point the index had reached in the previous twelve months: the data puts it 0.0% below its own 52-week high, meaning the session's finish and the year's peak were one and the same number.
The move extended an already strong stretch. The Dow had risen 5.62% over the past week, 2.96% over the past month and 10.54% over three months, leaving it 13.38% higher for the calendar year to date. It stood 23.93% above its 52-week low of 43,968.64, and above both of the trend lines most commonly quoted: its 50-day average of 51,923.18 and its 200-day average of 49,166.85. A moving average is just the mean closing level over that many sessions, so trading above both describes an uptrend that has not yet broken.
Its closest peers, carrying the same 5 August date, did not follow. The S&P 500 slipped 0.14% and the Nasdaq fell 0.64%, so the blue-chip index rose on a day when the broader and more tech-heavy US gauges did not. Europe was similarly split: the FTSE 100 added 0.08% and the CAC 40 0.03%, while the DAX lost 0.29% and the Euro Stoxx 50 0.15%. In India, also dated 5 August, the Sensex closed 0.19% higher and the Nifty 50 0.04% higher.
The Asian readings in the pack are one session older, dated 4 August, so they cannot be read as part of the same trading day. On that earlier date the KOSPI rose 1.62% and Australia's ASX 200 1.4%, with the Nikkei up 0.32% and Shanghai up 0.33%; the Hang Seng fell 0.6% and Taiwan's TAIEX 0.06%.
On the news side, a headline from NDTV Profit reported that the S&P 500 and the Dow hit fresh records on an earnings boost and hopes around a Hormuz deal, and CNBC published a piece listing five reasons behind a market surge on Tuesday. Older items in the feed were structural rather than same-day: a report from WSJ, from more than a month earlier, said Alphabet would replace Verizon in the index, and FXStreet wrote that construction-equipment names accounted for a third of a Dow record. None of these is confirmed here beyond the fact that the headline exists.
What the data establishes is the move, the level and the trend position. It does not establish which of those reported factors produced the 0.75%, and two wire headlines in the same feed describe different sessions with different figures, so the pack offers no single driver for the day.
