Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 54,349.12 on 2026-08-05, edged up 0.5% on the session and is +13.1% year-to-date. Here is what the market data shows.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the 5 August session at 54,349.12, a gain of 0.49%, and that close was also the highest point the 30-stock benchmark had reached in the past year: the pack's 52-week high and its latest close are the same figure.

The move came at the top of a strong run rather than the start of one. The Dow was up 5.34% over the preceding week, 10.25% over three months and 13.08% for the year to date. One number there is worth pausing on: the one-month gain of 2.69% is smaller than the one-week gain, meaning the earlier part of the month gave back ground the recent sessions had to win again.

The index sat above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which are the average closing price over the last 50 and 200 sessions and serve as a rough line between an uptrend and a downtrend. Those averages stood at 51,920.33 and 49,166.13, and the close was 23.61% above the 52-week low of 43,968.64.

The peers in the pack do not all carry the same date, so this was not one synchronised global session. The two other US benchmarks are stamped the same day as the Dow, 5 August, and they went the other way: the S&P 500 slipped 0.17% and the Nasdaq fell 0.83%. Every non-US peer is stamped 6 August, a session later, and that group split too. Europe was firmer, with the CAC 40 up 0.69%, the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.61%, the DAX up 0.27% and the FTSE 100 up 0.18%. Asia leaned weaker: the KOSPI dropped 4.58%, the Hang Seng 1.49%, the Nikkei 0.93% and the TAIEX 0.48%, while Shanghai added 0.57%, the ASX 200 0.47%, the Sensex 0.48% and the Nifty 50 0.05%.

The headlines around the session point in more than one direction. A report from Benzinga described the Dow hitting a record while gold jumped 4%, and one from FXEmpire credited earnings and relief on oil. A TradingKey report had the Dow at a new high with the Nasdaq down 0.83%, tech stocks retreating, gold stocks gaining, Nvidia up 3.43% and SpaceX down 13% after results. A later FXStreet headline described Dow futures gaining on a tech-driven rally, characterising tech the opposite way. These are reports, not verified facts, and the pack does not reconcile them.

The data establishes the shape of the day: a 0.49% advance to the top of the one-year range while the two other large US indices fell. It does not establish a cause. The pack shows no single obvious catalyst, only competing accounts, and the Dow's divergence from the Nasdaq on the same date is plain in the numbers without being explained by them.
