Nasdaq rose 1.3%
The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.3% on 7 August to close at 26,690.62 — the largest one-day move of the fifteen world indices in Strota's peer set, and the reason this session earned a wrap when most did not.
That left the technology-heavy benchmark within 1.49% of its 52-week high of 27,093.90, and 28.35% above the 52-week low of 20,794.64. It closed above both of its widely watched trend averages: the 50-day at 25,941.68 and the 200-day at 24,090.44, simple averages of recent closing levels that traders treat as a rough line between an uptrend and a downtrend. Year to date the index was up 14.84%.
The recent record has an odd shape. The Composite gained 5.19% over the past week but only 1.85% over the past month, and 3.43% over three months. Effectively all of the month's progress arrived in its final week, which means ground was lost in the weeks before it.
Every peer market carried the same closing date of 7 August, so this was a like-for-like comparison, not a sequence of staggered closes. Both large US benchmarks advanced, unequally: the S&P 500 added 0.62% and the Dow 0.28%, against the Nasdaq's 1.3%. Europe was uniformly positive and modest, with the DAX up 0.69%, the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.33%, the FTSE 100 up 0.31% and the CAC 40 up 0.17%. Asia split — Shanghai rose 1.02% and the Hang Seng 0.54%, while the Nikkei slipped 0.12%, the KOSPI 0.6%, the TAIEX 0.38% and the ASX 200 0.09%. India was lower, the Sensex down 0.58% and the Nifty 50 down 0.27%.
Only two of the eight headlines in the pack were less than a day old. A report from TradingKey tied the rise to cooling expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike, with memory stocks sold off while software gained, and cited SpaceX up 15.83%. Goodreturns reported that US nonfarm payrolls — the monthly count of jobs added outside farming — fell to 23K, and put the Nasdaq's advance at 350 points. Neither figure appears in Strota's own data.
The older headlines do not agree with one another. Business Insider and CNBC, both from two days earlier, wrote about the Nasdaq 100 in bullish terms, while a ten-day-old NBC News report had that same index sliding into correction as global chip and memory stocks sold off, and Benzinga reported it tumbling a day earlier as talks over a Hormuz deal progressed. Those all concern the Nasdaq 100, a narrower index than the Composite, and cannot all describe the same market. So the pack establishes the size and position of this move precisely, and its cause only by attribution: the data here does not independently establish why buyers turned up.
