Sensex fell 0.6%
The BSE Sensex ended its 7 August session at 78,499.17, a fall of 0.58%. The decline was broad rather than sharp: the Nifty 50, India's other headline benchmark, slipped 0.27% the same day.
That close left the index mid-range. It sat 8.47% below its 52-week high of 85,762.01 and 9.11% above its 52-week low of 71,947.55. It held above its 50-day moving average of 76,677.90 - the running average of the last fifty closes, a rough short-term trend marker - but stayed below its 200-day average of 80,025.57. The recent record is mildly positive: up 0.52% on the week, 2.29% on the month, 1.51% over three months. The year is not: down 7.89% in 2026 so far, so the rebound has recovered only part of an earlier decline.
The peer list does not report a single date, so it has to be read in groups. Among markets whose latest close was also 7 August, Europe finished higher across the board - the DAX up 0.69%, the Euro Stoxx 50 up 0.33%, the FTSE 100 up 0.31%, the CAC 40 up 0.17%. Asia was mixed: Shanghai gained 1.02% and the Hang Seng 0.54%, while the Nikkei eased 0.12% and Taiwan's TAIEX lost 0.38%. Against that set the Sensex was the weakest.
Two other groups carry later dates and describe subsequent sessions. The US benchmarks last closed on 10 August, all three slightly lower: the S&P 500 off 0.06%, the Dow off 0.11%, the Nasdaq off 0.32%. The KOSPI and the ASX 200 are stamped 11 August, at plus 0.13% and minus 0.09%. In sequence, these read as quiet sessions rather than a shared shock.
The news in the pack does not explain the move, and much of it postdates the close. A report from ETV Bharat described markets falling in early trade on a spike in crude oil prices; a headline from upstox.com five days earlier had the Sensex rising more than six hundred points amid lower crude - crude appears as both headwind and tailwind inside one week. A report from business-standard.com concerns Wipro's removal from the Nifty 50 at a semi-annual review effective 30 September, a mechanical reweighting. Only four of eight headlines are recent.
What the pack establishes is limited: a modest down day, a benchmark above its short-term average and below its long-term one, and a year still negative despite a better month. It does not establish a driver for the 0.58% fall - there is no sector or single-stock breakdown here, and the fresh headlines describe other days.
