Nasdaq fell 1.3%
The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26,289.71 on 18 August 2026, down 1.33% for the session and the weakest of the three US benchmarks in this pack. The weekly fall was much milder at 0.59%, so almost all of the week's damage was concentrated in this one day.
Stepped back, the longer readings stayed intact. The index was up 3.06% over one month, 0.76% over three months and 13.11% for the year to date. It finished 2.97% below its 52-week high of 27,093.9 and 26.43% above its 52-week low of 20,794.64, and held above both its 50-day moving average of 25,914.5 and its 200-day average of 24,204.65 - the smoothed trend lines many traders use to define an uptrend.
Peer markets in the pack do not all carry the same date, so this was not one synchronised global sell-off. Dated 18 August, the same session, the S&P 500 fell 0.69% and the Dow 0.22%. The European and most Asian readings were a session older, dated 17 August, and pulled both ways: the FTSE 100 was down 0.28%, the DAX 0.38%, the CAC 40 0.66% and the Euro Stoxx 50 0.14%, with the Sensex off 0.36% and the Nifty 50 off 0.32%, while the Hang Seng rose 1.34%, Shanghai 1.41% and the TAIEX 0.1%.
The sharpest moves in the list were the newest, stamped 19 August and therefore struck after the Nasdaq had closed. Japan's Nikkei was down 4.92% and South Korea's KOSPI down 6.78% on that date, while Australia's ASX 200 slipped 0.21%. Sitting a day later, they follow the US session rather than accompany it, and nothing in the pack links them.
News here was thin: of eight headlines only three were fresh, and several were not reporting at all but poster listings and definition pages built around the index name. A report from FXEmpire, filed eight hours earlier, framed rising bond yields as a threat to the Nasdaq uptrend with memory stocks sinking. A recap from TradingKey, a day older, said close to the opposite on chips, with memory names outperforming and SanDisk up 9%. The freshest item, from bnnbloomberg.ca, concerned Canada, reporting the S&P/TSX composite lower as a deadline for 50% tariffs from the United States neared.
Honestly read, then, the data does not establish a single driver for the 1.33% decline. Two fresh headlines contradict each other on the same sector, neither is confirmed here, and no earnings, policy decision or data release appears in the pack. What the numbers do show is one heavy session inside a trend still positive on every horizon given.
