KOSPI soared 5.9%
The KOSPI ended the August 20 session up 5.89% at 6,852.58, capping a sharp rebound after a volatile stretch. The single-day gain was larger than the index's entire trailing one-week return of 4.16%, underscoring the scale of the move.
The index still sits well inside a volatile year. It closed 24.82% below its 52-week high of 9,114.55 and 118.93% above its 52-week low of 3,130.09, finishing below its 50-day average of 7,337.29 while holding above its 200-day average of 5,915.05. Year to date the KOSPI is up 62.61%, though it is down 5.76% over three months. A CNBC headline from three weeks ago described South Korea's market as "bipolar", citing meltdowns and a record rally, and a Business Insider headline said the market was back in a bull run after a recent rout.
Peers moved less sharply, but their most recent closes are not all from the same day. United States benchmarks that closed on August 19 edged higher, with the S&P 500 up 0.21%, the Nasdaq up 0.16% and the Dow up 0.22%. Among markets whose most recent close is August 20, the Nikkei rose 1.36%, the Hang Seng 0.91%, the Shanghai Composite 0.24%, the TAIEX 0.48% and the ASX 200 0.33%, while the FTSE 100 fell 0.24%, the DAX 0.41%, the CAC 40 edged up 0.03% and the Euro Stoxx 50 slipped 0.05% — all dwarfed by the KOSPI's own gain.
News reports attributed the rebound mainly to hopes of share buybacks. A headline from KED Global said the Kospi snapped back, led by Samsung and SK Hynix on share buyback hopes, and a report from finance.biggo.com cited a ₩9.1 trillion buyback unveiled by SK Hynix alongside a surge in Korean stocks. A Businesskorea headline confirmed the index closed sharply above 6,850. These explanations come from headlines rather than from data the pack can verify.
What the pack establishes is the scale of the move and where the index sits: above its 200-day average, below its 50-day average and far below the year's high after a 62.61% run year to date. It does not establish a single driver for the session; the buyback story remains a report, not a measured cause.
