Nasdaq fell 1.0%
The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.0% in the session dated 2026-08-20, closing at 26067.17. The decline extended a soft week for the technology-heavy US benchmark, which ended the day down 2.75% over the past week, though it remained up 1.46% over the past month.
The pullback left the index 3.79% below its 52-week high of 27093.9 and 25.36% above its 52-week low of 20794.64. The longer trend stayed intact: the composite closed above both its 50-day moving average of 25930.3 and its 200-day moving average of 24230.11 -- the two smoothed price lines traders use to gauge medium- and long-term direction. Year to date it was still up 12.16%, even after slipping 0.77% over the past three months.
The weakness was shared across US markets in the same session, with the S&P 500 down 0.87% and the Dow off 1.32%. Europe was softer too on 2026-08-20: the DAX lost 0.42%, the CAC 40 fell 0.57% and the Euro Stoxx 50 eased 0.35%, while the FTSE 100 was essentially flat at 0.04%. Asian markets that closed the same day leaned the other way -- the Hang Seng added 0.8%, Shanghai rose 0.24%, the TAIEX gained 0.48%, and India's Sensex and Nifty 50 climbed 0.82% and 0.64% respectively. The Nikkei, KOSPI and ASX 200 readings in the data carry the following session's date, 2026-08-21, so their moves came after the Nasdaq's close rather than alongside it.
On the news side, the pack offered little that explains the fall. A headline from TradingKey reported the Dow dropping 700 points and the Nasdaq falling 1%, and noted that memory and optical-communication names went against the tide, with Micron up 4%. That is a description of the tape, not a cause. The remaining headlines were background pieces -- an explainer on the Nasdaq-100 and an index-inclusion note -- rather than anything tied to the day's selling.
Taken together, the session read as a broad but orderly US pullback within an uptrend: the index gave back ground yet held above both major moving averages and kept a double-digit year-to-date gain. The data does not establish a single driver for the move, and nothing in the evidence identifies what set off the day's selling.
