KOSPI tumbled 3.1%
South Korea's KOSPI fell 3.12 per cent on Monday to close at 6696.96, the steepest one-day drop among major world markets. The decline took the index below the 6,700 mark, and it extended a poor stretch: over the past week the index is down 4.03 per cent, over the past month 5.64 per cent, and over the past three months 14.31 per cent.
The longer picture is more complicated than one bad session. Even after this slide, the KOSPI remains up 58.92 per cent year to date and sits 113.08 per cent above its 52-week low of 3142.93. But it now trades 26.52 per cent below its 52-week high of 9114.55 — technically a bear-market-sized drawdown from the peak — and it has fallen below its 50-day moving average of 7299.59 while remaining above its 200-day average of 5942.64. The market's recent history is unusually violent in both directions; only three days earlier, The Economic Times reported the index had jumped 5 per cent and exited bear-market territory.
Elsewhere, the session offered no comparable shock. Among markets closing on the same date, Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 1.89 per cent and Taiwan's TAIEX 1.02 per cent, Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.74 per cent and Shanghai fell 0.59 per cent, while Europe barely moved — the FTSE 100 added 0.09 per cent, the DAX 0.01 per cent and the CAC 40 shed 0.06 per cent. Australia's ASX 200 rose 0.49 per cent, and India's Sensex and Nifty 50 closed 0.22 per cent and 0.14 per cent lower. American benchmarks last closed two sessions earlier, on August 21, when the S&P 500 and Nasdaq each added 0.43 per cent and the Dow rose 0.98 per cent — so their most recent prints predate Monday's Asian trading rather than echoing it.
As for what drove the fall, the evidence is one prominent suspect and little certainty. According to a report from TradingKey published during the day, Samsung Electronics shares plunged more than 8 per cent, dragging the KOSPI index lower; Businesskorea's closing report described the 3.12 per cent slide as a break of the 6,700 level. A separate report described foreign and institutional investors selling in tandem as the index moved around the 6,830 area earlier in the session. Recent context matters too: KED Global reported the index snapping back three days ago led by Samsung and SK Hynix on share-buyback hopes, while Al Jazeera reported South Korea's rookie investors losing small fortunes amid the AI-stocks frenzy.
What the data establishes is the size and shape of the fall, and what it does not establish is any confirmed cause. A single reported stock's plunge is consistent with the index's move, but nothing here proves it accounts for all of it.
