Nasdaq fell 1.0%
The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26099.77 on September 1, down 1.03% for the session, its weakest of the major US benchmarks as higher oil prices and rising Treasury yields pressured technology and growth shares.
The selloff was broad across US equities that day. The S&P 500 fell 0.71% and the Dow slipped 0.79%, according to the latest closes in the pack. The Globe and Mail described stocks falling on rising yields and oil, with Apple a lone bright spot, a pattern consistent with investors rotating out of rate-sensitive growth names.
Asia's most recent sessions were also soft. Japan's Nikkei dropped 2.58% on September 2, South Korea's KOSPI fell 1.99% and Australia's ASX 200 lost 1.47% the same day. Europe's DAX eased 0.41% and the CAC 40 ticked up 0.18% on August 31, while Shanghai rose 0.75%.
The index is not cheap by history. At 26099.77 it sits 3.67% below its 52-week high of 27093.9 and 25.51% above its 52-week low of 20794.64, and remains above both its 50-day average of 25950.02 and its 200-day average of 24328.7. It is up 12.3% year to date but has slipped 3.64% over the past three months, even as it gained 2.86% in the last month.
The data shows the drop came alongside a risk-off tone driven by energy and rates, with no single company-specific catalyst in the pack. The move looks like a continuation of a rates-sensitive rotation rather than a new fundamental break, and the index still holds above its key moving averages.
For investors, the session is a reminder that the index's heavy growth weighting makes it sensitive to moves in long-dated yields, a link the pack's headlines make explicit.
