Nasdaq rose 1.4%
The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26584.06 on Wednesday, 3 September 2026, a gain of 1.4% on the session. That one day accounted for most of the index's recent progress: over the past week it was up only 0.16%, and over the past month 0.84%, so the Wednesday advance lifted both windows from roughly flat to modestly positive. The three-month return was still negative at -0.92%.
The longer trend remained intact. The index finished 1.88% below its 52-week high of 27093.9 and 27.84% above its 52-week low of 20794.64, and it was up 14.38% for the year to date. It also closed above both its 50-day simple moving average of 25989.5 and its 200-day average of 24378.83; a moving average is the mean closing level over the stated number of sessions, and a close above both is the conventional description of an index in an uptrend. On that reading the Nasdaq sat near the top of its range, a little short of its high.
The other two major US benchmarks rose in the same Wednesday session. The S&P 500 added 1.06% and the Dow 1.18%, so the Nasdaq's gain was the largest of the three.
The rest of the peers list carries a later date, 4 September, and so describes each market's most recent close rather than a simultaneous move. Asian markets were mostly higher: the Nikkei rose 1.26%, the Hang Seng 1.74%, the KOSPI 1.64% and the TAIEX 1.51%, while Shanghai slipped 0.3% and the ASX 200 fell 0.16%. India's Sensex added 0.48% and the Nifty 50 0.1%. European closes for the same date were close to flat, with the FTSE 100 and Euro Stoxx 50 each up 0.01%, the DAX up 0.1% and the CAC 40 down 0.05%. Because those readings post-date the Nasdaq session, they show what followed it, not what moved alongside it.
Of the headlines in the pack, only one dealt directly with the session. According to a headline from TradingKey, US stocks rose with the Nasdaq gaining 1.4%, technology and software shares led the advance, and SpaceX and Tesla were up 6% and 5% respectively. The remaining items were index explainers, a membership notice and trading guides published days or weeks earlier, none of which bears on Wednesday's move.
The data therefore establishes the size and shape of the move: a 1.4% rise, the strongest of the three US indices, leaving the Nasdaq above both its moving averages and just under its 52-week high. What it does not establish is a cause. The pack contains no data release, earnings result or policy event for the day, and a single headline attributing leadership to technology and software stocks is context rather than a confirmed driver.
