S&P 500 rose 1.1%
The S&P 500 closed at 7747.71 on September 3, 2026, up 1.06% on the session. The gain left the US benchmark 0.66% below its 52-week high of 7798.99 and 22.13% above its 52-week low of 6343.72, so the index finished the day near the top of its one-year range rather than anywhere close to the bottom of it.
The trend backdrop was firm. The index sat above both its 50-day moving average of 7584.49 and its 200-day moving average of 7136.53; a moving average is simply the average closing level over the stated number of sessions, and trading above both is the usual shorthand for an uptrend on medium and long horizons. Year to date the S&P 500 was up 13.18%. The shorter windows were quieter: 0.22% over one week, 0.31% over one month and 2.15% over three months, so most of the year's advance was built earlier and recent weeks had been a grind before this session's jump.
The other two major US indices moved the same way on the same day. The Nasdaq rose 1.4% and the Dow added 1.18%, both dated September 3, so the rally ran across US large caps rather than being confined to one segment.
Peer markets outside the US carry a later date, September 4, because they closed after Wall Street did, so their figures describe each market's most recent close rather than the same session. On that basis Asia was firm: the Hang Seng gained 1.74%, the KOSPI 1.64%, the TAIEX 1.51% and the Nikkei 1.26%, while Shanghai slipped 0.3% and the ASX 200 eased 0.16%. Europe was close to flat, with the DAX up 0.1%, the FTSE 100 and Euro Stoxx 50 each up 0.01% and the CAC 40 down 0.05%. In India the Sensex added 0.48% and the Nifty 50 rose 0.1%.
The news flow pointed in one direction. According to a headline from marketwatch.com, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended sharply higher as software stocks and Big Tech rallied, with Treasury yields easing after remarks from Fed governor Waller. A CNBC headline said the S&P 500 posted back-to-back gains as Treasury yields retreated, and another from the same publisher said the Dow rose nearly 300 points to snap a three-day slide. Yahoo Finance called it the best day in a month for the Dow and S&P 500 as rate-hike fears eased, a Moneycontrol.com headline framed Waller's comments as offering inflation optimism, and an Upstox headline named Salesforce, Microsoft and Meta among the gainers.
What the data establishes is the size and breadth of the move and where it left the index: a 1.06% gain to 7747.71, within 0.66% of a one-year high, above both major moving averages and 13.18% higher for the year. The headlines converge on easing Treasury yields and Waller's remarks as the context, but they are headlines rather than confirmed causes, and the pack carries no yield levels or Fed data of its own against which to test that account.
