KOSPI closed at 6,894.23 on 2026-09-18, jumped 2.7% on the session and is +63.6% year-to-date. Here is what the market data shows.

South Korea's KOSPI finished its most recent session at 6894.23, a gain of 2.66% and the largest one-day advance of any major market tracked alongside it. The close, dated 18 September, left the benchmark just short of the 6,900 level.

One strong day did little to settle a mixed medium-term picture. Over a week the index was still down 0.23%, and over a month it had added only 0.61%. The three-month reading is the harsh one, a decline of 23.84%. Year to date the direction reverses entirely: the KOSPI is up 63.6%.

The range tells the same split story. The index sits 24.36% below its 52-week high of 9114.55 and 103.61% above its 52-week low of 3386.05, so it has more than doubled off the bottom of its own year while still trading a quarter beneath the top. It closed above both its 50-day moving average of 6698.57 and its 200-day average of 6206.41, those averages being the mean closing price of the last 50 and 200 sessions.

Other markets carrying the same date moved far less. In Asia the TAIEX rose 1.93%, the Nikkei 1.38%, Shanghai 0.94% and the Hang Seng 0.6%, so Korea led a firmer region rather than moving alone. Europe went the other way, the DAX down 1.6%, the CAC 40 down 1.49% and the FTSE 100 down 1.45%. The US indices were split, with the Nasdaq up 0.39% and the Dow down 0.18%.

On the news side, a closing-market report from Businesskorea attributed the 2.66% gain to foreign investors turning buyers after eight sessions. A separate report from TradingKey tied the move toward 6,900 to chip names, citing SK Hynix rising over 6% and Kioxia jumping 9%.

Neither of those reports is recent, and no flow, sector or currency reading is available to test the foreign-buying account independently, so it stands as a report rather than an established cause. What the numbers settle is narrower: a sharp up day in a market still far below its high, far above its low, and above both of its moving averages.
