Nasdaq fell 0.7%
The Nasdaq Composite fell 0.69% in the session of 23 September, closing at 26936.04. The decline came after a strong run: the technology-heavy index was still up 3.67% over the past week and 2.89% over the past month, so the session trimmed recent gains rather than reversing them.
The index remained close to the top of its yearly range. The close sat 0.69% below its 52-week high of 27122.09 and 29.53% above its 52-week low of 20794.64. The Nasdaq also stayed above both its 50-day simple moving average, at 26109.64, and its 200-day average, at 24589.15. Both are averages of daily closes used to gauge the trend. Year to date, the index was up 15.89%, and over three months it had gained 5.27%.
Other US benchmarks, which share the same 23 September session date, fell further. The S&P 500 dropped 0.76% and the Dow lost 1.03%, making the Nasdaq the smallest decliner of the three. South Korea's KOSPI, whose latest close in the pack is also dated 23 September, rose 1.04%. The remaining markets in the list carry a 24 September date, meaning they traded after the US close. On that day, the Nikkei gained 0.76% and the FTSE 100 added 0.12%, while the DAX slipped 0.18%, the CAC 40 fell 0.16% and the Euro Stoxx 50 eased 0.07%. Elsewhere in Asia on 24 September, the Hang Seng dipped 0.29%, the TAIEX lost 0.28%, the ASX 200 fell 0.72% and Shanghai dropped 1.22%. In India, the Sensex fell 1.67% and the Nifty 50 fell 1.64%. Because these dates differ, the moves describe a sequence across time zones rather than one simultaneous session.
The news flow offers limited explanation for the US decline. Several headlines from earlier in the week, including ones from TradingKey and FXLeaders, reported that the Nasdaq Composite had reached a record high, with chip stocks credited for the rally. A headline from NBC News described tech stocks rising as bond yields and oil prices fell. The only fresh item, according to a headline from TradingView, reported that S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures were dropping as Bessent said Iranian aviation restrictions were working, with the tickers ABNB, ORCL and COST named as in focus. That report concerns futures trading after the session in question, so it does not account for the 23 September close.
What the data establishes is a modest pullback of 0.69% from a level near the index's 52-week high, with the broader trend measures still pointing upward. It does not establish a single driver for the day's decline, which was shared, and exceeded, by the other major US indices.
