DMART: Avenue Supermarts Q2 Net Profit Rises to Rs 743 Crore as shares slid -4.3%
Avenue Supermarts, the company behind the DMart store chain, closed 4.32% lower at ₹3,364.9 on Monday, against a previous close of ₹3,516.8. The damage was done early: the stock opened with a gap down of 3.12% and never recovered it. After an intraday high of ₹3,448 it slid to a low of ₹3,350.6, finishing at the day's low and 0.78% below VWAP, the volume-weighted average price of the session. The Nifty fell 0.7%, so the stock lost far more than the broader market.
Turnover was heavy, though the pack is not consistent on how heavy. A live signal flagged a volume spike of 18.2x, while the relative-volume reading in the technicals stood at 5.48. The pack does not explain the gap between the two; both readings agree only that participation was well above normal.
The futures footprint came with a caveat. The F&O classification was short buildup, meaning fresh futures positions were opened as the price fell, with open interest up 2.61% against a price change of 1.46% lower. That snapshot is stamped to the previous close, so it describes positioning going into Monday rather than the reaction during it.
There was no visible institutional or insider trail. No bulk or block deals were recorded on the day or in the past 30 days, no institutional streak was on file, and no insider filings appeared in the last 60 days.
Technically, the stock was already weak before the open. It traded below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, had fallen more than 5.6% over the past week and more than 8.7% over the past month, and its 14-day RSI, a momentum gauge, stood at 26.3, a level usually described as oversold. The close left it 27.54% below its 52-week high and just 0.43% above its 52-week low.
The one fresh news item was a headline from NDTV Profit, published about six hours before the wrap, reporting that Jefferies and Morgan Stanley had reacted to what it called a Q2 profit miss, while arguing the long-term case remained intact. A Whalesbook headline from two days earlier said Q2 net profit rose to Rs 743 crore. The two framings need not conflict, since profit can grow and still disappoint, but the pack holds no estimates to measure the result against. Older items, including a MarketsMojo report on an open-interest surge and a Capital Group stake sale reported 46 days ago, predate the session.
The timing of the brokerage reaction lines up with the gap down, and the heavy volume and short buildup are consistent with traders repricing the results. Still, the data does not prove the headline caused the fall, and the weaker Nifty was part of the backdrop. What the pack does establish is a sharp, high-volume drop that closed at the day's low, near the bottom of the stock's 52-week range.
