The Nifty's P/E divides the index's free-float market value by its constituents' trailing twelve-month earnings. NSE publishes it every day with the P/B and dividend yield; this page takes those figures straight from NSE's index file.
A low P/E against history says the market is cheap relative to what its companies earn now; it says nothing about whether those earnings will grow. Use it as one input, not a timer.
The April 2021 break
On 1 April 2021 NSE began computing index P/E from consolidated earnings (including subsidiaries) instead of standalone earnings. The Nifty's P/E fell from 40.4 to 33.2 overnight with no change in prices. Figures before and after that date measure different things, so this page ranks today's P/E only against the consolidated era and marks the break on the chart. Old rules of thumb such as 'above 25 is expensive' were set on the standalone basis.
P/E and the returns that followed
The table above groups every consolidated-era session by its P/E and shows the Nifty's price return over the following year. The windows overlap and the era is short, so it is a description of these five years, not a rule. Longer studies of Indian and global markets find valuation says more about five-to-ten-year returns than about the next twelve months.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Nifty PE ratio today?
The panel at the top gives the Nifty 50's P/E from NSE's latest index file, with P/B, dividend yield and where the P/E ranks since April 2021.
What is a good Nifty PE ratio to invest?
There is no fixed level. On the consolidated basis used since April 2021, the Nifty's P/E has ranged roughly between 19 and 34; the page shows today's rank within that range. Lower has tended to mean better long-run returns, but not reliably over a year.
Why did the Nifty PE fall in April 2021?
NSE switched from standalone to consolidated earnings for index P/E on 1 April 2021. Consolidated earnings are larger, so the P/E dropped from about 40 to 33 with no change in the index.
Where does NSE publish the Nifty PE?
In its daily index closing file, alongside P/B and dividend yield for every Nifty index. Strota reads that file each evening.
What is the Nifty earnings yield?
The inverse of the P/E (1 / P/E, as a percentage). Comparing it with the 10-year government bond yield is a common way to judge equities against bonds.
