Max pain is the expiry price at which the total value of all open options would be smallest, the price at which option buyers as a group would collect least and option sellers keep the most premium. It is computed from the open interest at every strike of an expiry.
The theory behind it is that option writers, who hold the other side of most positions, have the weight to steer the price towards max pain into expiry. The page measures that claim on the Nifty's own expiries.
How max pain is calculated
For each candidate settlement price, add up what every call and put would be worth at expiry: calls are worth the settlement minus their strike when above it, puts the strike minus the settlement when below. Multiply by the open interest at each strike and sum. The strike where that total is smallest is max pain. Strota computes it across every strike of the nearest expiry from NSE's end-of-day F&O file.
Does the Nifty settle at max pain?
The test on this page takes every Nifty expiry since July 2024 and compares two guesses made one, three and five sessions earlier: max pain on that day, and simply the price on that day. If expiries were pinned to max pain, it would land closer to the settlement more often than not. Read the result before trading the theory.
