Daily Nifty Next 50 open, high, low and close from NSE’s end-of-day index file, updated after each session (no intraday bars). Volume is the index constituents’ traded shares where NSE publishes it. Charts by TradingView Lightweight Charts™ © TradingView, Inc.
Take the 100 largest NSE companies in the Nifty 100, remove the 50 in the Nifty 50, and the 50 that remain form the Nifty Next 50, once called the Nifty Junior. They are large companies in their own right, often in faster-growing or more cyclical businesses, and they are the pool the Nifty 50 usually draws its new entrants from.
The index tends to swing more than the Nifty 50 in both directions, which the returns table shows over each period. Everything comes from exchange files: the index level, P/E, P/B and dividend yield from NSE's end-of-day index file, the constituent list from NSE's own constituent file, open interest from the F&O bhavcopy, delivery from the security-wise delivery file and deals from NSE's bulk and block deal disclosures. Live prices refresh through the trading day.
Why the Next 50 behaves differently
The Next 50 is more concentrated in companies whose earnings move with the economic cycle, public-sector enterprises and businesses still growing into large caps, and it has fewer of the banks and IT services firms that dominate the Nifty 50. Its weights are also spread more evenly, so no single stock dominates the way the largest names do in the Nifty 50.
When the Nifty 50's semi-annual review adds a company, it usually comes from this index, and the stock dropped from the Nifty 50 usually moves into it.
Key takeaways
- The Nifty 100 minus the Nifty 50: 50 large caps.
- The usual source of new Nifty 50 entrants.
- More cyclical and more volatile than the Nifty 50.
