Stock Market Today (India)
How the Indian market closed, in numbers: indices, breadth, movers, sectors, FII/DII flows and derivatives, and what is due next session.
On 21 Oct 2026 the Nifty 50 closed down 0.34% at 22,811.35; 80 of 497 Nifty 500 stocks rose and 417 fell. In the cash market FIIs were net buyers of ₹1,022 crore and DIIs net buyers of ₹1,614 crore; India VIX ended at 15.68.
A one-page summary of the latest Indian market session: how the Nifty 50, Sensex, Bank Nifty and the mid- and small-cap indices closed, how many stocks rose and fell, the Nifty 50's biggest movers, the best and worst sectors, FII and DII cash flows, India VIX and the Nifty put-call ratio, plus the expiries, results and ex-dates due in the next session. It updates after every close from exchange data, with no commentary or forecasts.
Most market summaries are written as stories. This page is the numbers behind them, gathered in one place after each session: every block comes from an exchange file or a regulatory disclosure, carries its own date, and links to the page with the full detail.
During market hours a live line shows the Nifty, Bank Nifty and India VIX, and the Nifty 50 movers update with live prices; the index table switches to the new session once NSE publishes its end-of-day index file in the evening.
How to read a session
Start with the indices, then check whether the move was broad. A Nifty gain with more Nifty 500 stocks falling than rising was carried by a few heavyweights; the pullers and draggers page names them. Then look at who was buying: FII and DII cash figures are provisional on the day and final the next morning.
India VIX and the put-call ratio describe the options market, not the direction of the next move. Strota's own tests found extreme PCR readings and max pain levels add little to the base rate; the method notes are on the PCR and max pain pages.
Key takeaways
- Index closes, breadth, movers, sectors, flows and derivatives on one page.
- Each block shows the date of its data; nothing is estimated.
- The 'next session' panel lists expiries, results and ex-dates.
