Nifty Metal is the sectoral index for metals and mining on the NSE. It holds shares such as Tata Steel, Hindalco, JSW Steel, Vedanta, NMDC and SAIL, weighted by free-float market capitalisation. Because the index is narrow and cyclical, it tends to move harder than the headline indices in both directions — which is why it gets watched whenever commodity prices or China demand shift.

This page puts the index level and its constituents on one screen. The level, the day's move, the 1-week and 1-month change, the position inside the 52-week range, and the index's P/E, P/B and dividend yield come from NSE's own end-of-day index file. The constituent table below carries each company's price, daily change and traded value.

No index weights are shown, because NSE's public constituent file doesn't publish them. Rather than estimate a weight and present it as fact, this page shows what the exchange actually publishes.

How to read the Nifty Metal level

A single day's move tells you little on its own. The three readings that carry information are the pace (how the 1-week move compares with the 1-month move — an accelerating fall is a different thing from a slow drift), the position in the 52-week range, and the breadth within the index — how many constituents are up versus down.

Breadth is the fastest sanity check on the sector. If the index is up 1% but only three of fifteen constituents are higher, the move is being carried by one or two heavyweights and the rest of the sector disagrees. If twelve of fifteen are up, the whole sector is moving.

The valuation ratios matter more here than for a broad index. Metals are cyclical, so a low P/E on a metal index usually means earnings are near a peak rather than that the sector is cheap, and a high or negative P/E often appears near the bottom of the cycle. The ratio is a cycle indicator, not a value signal — read it alongside the 52-week position, never on its own.

What moves the metals sector in India

Four things drive Nifty Metal more than anything else. Global commodity prices — steel, aluminium, zinc and copper benchmarks are set outside India, so the sector follows them closely. Chinese demand, because China is the largest consumer of most industrial metals and its construction cycle sets the marginal price.

Domestic demand and government spending, with infrastructure and housing construction translating into steel and cement-linked earnings. And the rupee, which cuts both ways: a weaker rupee lifts the realisations of exporters and commodity producers, while raising the cost of imported coking coal and other inputs.

The sector also carries policy exposure that most sectors avoid — safeguard duties and anti-dumping actions on steel imports, mining leases and auction rules, and environmental clearances all land directly on earnings.

Where this data comes from

Every number on this page traces to an NSE-published file. The index level, points change, percentage change, volume, turnover, P/E, P/B and dividend yield come from NSE's daily all-indices end-of-day file, which is published after the session closes and covers every NSE index.

The constituent list comes from NSE's own index constituent file, which also supplies each company's industry and ISIN. Constituent quotes refresh during the session. Index values in this page are end-of-day; the constituent prices are the latest available.

If you want the sector in context rather than in isolation, the sector flow page shows all the major NSE sectoral indices on one screen, and the metal and energy rotation page covers how capital moves between the two.

Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions

What is the Nifty Metal index?

Nifty Metal is a sectoral index of metals and mining companies listed on the NSE, weighted by free-float market capitalisation. It includes names such as Tata Steel, Hindalco, JSW Steel, Vedanta, NMDC, SAIL, National Aluminium and Hindustan Zinc.

How many companies are in the Nifty Metal index?

This page lists every constituent in NSE's published constituent file for the index, and the count updates whenever NSE revises the index. The table above is generated directly from that file rather than a hardcoded list.

Where can I see the Nifty Metal P/E ratio?

In the index summary at the top of this page. NSE publishes the P/E, P/B and dividend yield for every index in its daily all-indices file. For a cyclical index like metals, read the P/E alongside the 52-week position, because a low reading usually means earnings are near a peak.

What is the difference between Nifty Metal and the metal stocks on the BSE?

They are different indices maintained by different exchanges with their own constituent and weighting rules, so the levels and moves won't match exactly. The companies overlap heavily, because the large Indian metals producers are listed on both exchanges.

Which stocks move Nifty Metal the most?

The heaviest free-float weights. Because NSE's public constituent file doesn't publish weights, this page doesn't show them — the honest way to judge influence is to watch the constituent table during a big index move and see which names carry it.

How often is the Nifty Metal data on this page updated?

The index level and valuation are refreshed from NSE's end-of-day index file, published after each session closes. Constituent prices are the latest available during the session. The "as of" date on the summary shows the vintage of the index values.
