PPF Calculator
PPF maturity value at the current 7.1% rate, yearly or monthly deposits, 5-year extensions, and the loan and partial-withdrawal limits for every year.
₹1.5 lakh deposited by 5 April every year for 15 years at 7.1% grows to about ₹40,68,209 from ₹22,50,000, all tax-free. The PPF rate is 7.1% for Oct-Dec 2026. The calculator shows each year's interest, the effect of depositing monthly instead, extensions in 5-year blocks, and how much you can borrow or withdraw in each year.
The Public Provident Fund is a 15-year government savings scheme, available at post offices and banks. It pays 7.1% a year for Oct-Dec 2026, compounded yearly, and it is fully tax-exempt: deposits qualify for section 80C under the old regime, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free under both regimes.
The same rules apply whether the account is at a post office or a bank, so the result is the same in both.
Current PPF rate
7.1% a year for Oct-Dec 2026. The Ministry of Finance sets small savings rates every quarter; the PPF rate has stayed at 7.1% since April 2020. The rate in force each quarter applies to the whole balance, so a future cut lowers the return on money already deposited. Test 6.5% or 7.5% in the calculator to see the range.
How PPF interest is calculated
Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of the month, at the yearly rate ÷ 12, and credited on 31 March. Two consequences:
Deposit by the 5th. Money that arrives on the 6th earns nothing for that month. Deposit early in the year. ₹1.5 lakh by 5 April every year grows to ₹40,68,209 in 15 years; the same amount in twelve monthly deposits grows to ₹39,44,599.
PPF maturity values
Yearly deposits by 5 April, at 7.1% throughout:
| Yearly deposit | Deposited in 15 years | At 15 years | At 20 years (one extension) | At 25 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹12,000 | ₹1,80,000 | ₹3,25,457 | ₹5,32,663 | ₹8,24,641 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹7,50,000 | ₹13,56,070 | ₹22,19,429 | ₹34,36,005 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹15,00,000 | ₹27,12,139 | ₹44,38,859 | ₹68,72,010 |
| ₹1,50,000 | ₹22,50,000 | ₹40,68,209 | ₹66,58,288 | ₹1,03,08,015 |
The extension columns assume you keep depositing. The deposit limits are ₹500 minimum and ₹1.5 lakh maximum per financial year, across all your PPF accounts and any minor's account you hold as guardian.
Maturity, extension and closing
The account matures after 15 full financial years, counted from the end of the year you opened it. Then you can close it, or extend it in blocks of 5 years, as many times as you like, with deposits (by filing Form H within a year of maturity) or without. During an extension without deposits you can withdraw any amount once a year.
Premature closure is allowed after 5 years for specified reasons such as serious illness or higher education, with 1% less interest for the whole period.
Loans and partial withdrawals
From the 3rd to the 6th financial year you can borrow up to 25% of the balance at the end of the second year before the loan. From the 7th year, one partial withdrawal a year is allowed: up to 50% of the lower of the balance at the end of the 4th year before and the balance at the end of the previous year. The year-wise table shows both limits for your deposits.
PPF vs other options
PPF's 7.1% is tax-free, so for a 30% taxpayer it equals a taxable return of about 10.3%. EPF pays more (8.25% for FY 2025-26; see the EPF calculator) but only for salaried employees. Equity funds have returned more over 15-year periods, with no guarantee and with tax. The post office FD pays a similar rate but is taxed every year.
