The words on this page, explained simply
New to this? Here is what each term means, in plain English.
- Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)
- A government savings account for a girl under 10. You deposit for 15 years; it keeps earning interest until 21 years after opening. Deposits, interest and the final amount are tax-free.
- Small savings rate
- The interest rate the Ministry of Finance sets every quarter for post office schemes such as PPF, SSY, NSC and SCSS. Most schemes lock it in when you open; PPF and SSY use each quarter's rate.
- Financial year
- India's tax year, from 1 April to 31 March.
- Compounding
- Earning returns on your earlier returns. ₹1 lakh growing at 10% a year becomes ₹1.1 lakh after a year; the next 10% is earned on ₹1.1 lakh, not ₹1 lakh. Over many years this snowballs, which is why starting early matters so much.
- Maturity
- The day a deposit or scheme ends and pays you out. The maturity value is what you get that day.
- Section 80C (now section 123)
- An income-tax rule that lets you cut your taxable income by up to ₹1.5 lakh a year for money put into PPF, EPF, ELSS funds, 5-year post office deposits and similar. Called section 80C in the 1961 Act and section 123 in the Income-tax Act, 2025 (from April 2026). Old tax regime only.
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government savings account for a girl child, opened at a post office or an authorised bank before she turns 10. Rules that change the numbers
Minimum deposit ₹250 and maximum ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year. Only one account per girl child. Deposits are made for 15 years from opening; after that the balance earns interest without new deposits until year 21.
Interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month and credited at the end of the financial year, so a deposit made by 5 April earns interest for the whole year. Withdrawal is allowed for her higher education, and the account can be closed early for her marriage after she turns 18.
Tax
Deposits qualify for the ₹1.5 lakh section 80C/123 deduction in the old tax regime. Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free.
