The words on this page, explained simply

New to this? Here is what each term means, in plain English.

Recurring deposit (RD)
A bank deposit where you put in the same amount every month for a fixed time and earn a fixed interest rate.
Small savings rate
The interest rate the Ministry of Finance sets every quarter for post office schemes such as PPF, SSY, NSC and SCSS. Most schemes lock it in when you open; PPF and SSY use each quarter's rate.
Compounded quarterly
Interest is added every three months and then itself earns interest, so the real yearly gain is a little more than the stated rate.
Maturity
The day a deposit or scheme ends and pays you out. The maturity value is what you get that day.
Premature closure
Closing a deposit before its term ends. Usually allowed after a minimum period, with a penalty or a lower interest rate.
Tax slab
The income-tax rate for your income band. Dividends are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.

A recurring deposit (RD) takes a fixed amount every month and pays it back with interest at the end of the term. Banks offer RDs from 6 months to 10 years; the post office RD runs for 5 years at a rate the government sets each quarter. Both compound interest every quarter.
