Atal Pension Yojana (APY)
A government-backed pension scheme for people aged 18 to 40 who don't pay income tax. You pay a fixed amount every month until 60 and get a fixed pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 a month after.
Guaranteed pension
The government promises the pension amount you chose. If the money invested earns less than needed, the government makes up the difference.
Nominee
The person who gets the saved money (₹1.7 lakh to ₹8.5 lakh) after both you and your spouse have died.
Leaving early
You can stop APY before 60, but then you only get back what you paid in plus the interest it earned, not a pension.

Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-guaranteed pension scheme run by PFRDA. You choose a pension of ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000 or ₹5,000 a month from age 60, and pay a fixed contribution until then. The earlier you join, the less you pay.

What you and your family get

From 60, the chosen pension for life. After your death it continues to your spouse, and after both the corpus is returned to the nominee: ₹1.7 lakh for a ₹1,000 pension up to ₹8.5 lakh for ₹5,000. If you die before 60, your spouse can continue the account or take the money out.

You can leave early voluntarily, but you get back only your contributions with the interest they earned. Missing payments brings a small penalty, and repeated defaults can close the account.
