In a rights issue the company offers existing holders new shares, usually below the market price, in proportion to what they hold. Unlike a bonus, you pay for them, and you can sell the entitlement instead of using it.

What happens to your shares

A bonus issue and a split both give you more shares without changing what your holding is worth. On the ex-date the price adjusts: after a 1:1 bonus, 100 shares at ₹1,000 become 200 shares at about ₹500. The company's value is unchanged; only the number of pieces grows.

Bonus shares are credited to your demat account after the record date. On NSE the ex-date and record date fall on the same day, and shares bought the day before settle in time.

Frequently asked questions

Which companies are giving bonus shares?

1 bonus issue and 2 stock splits have an upcoming ex-date on NSE. The next is Concord Biotech on 4 Nov 2026: bonus 1:1. 1 board meeting on NSE's calendar will consider one. To get bonus shares, buy by the trading day before the ex-date.

Is a bonus issue free money?

No. The share price falls in proportion on the ex-date, so the value of your holding is the same; you just hold more shares.

What is the difference between a bonus and a stock split?

A bonus issues new shares out of reserves and keeps the face value. A split divides each share into smaller ones and cuts the face value. For a shareholder the effect on value is the same.
