How this screen works
A fall in open interest means traders closed more futures contracts than they opened. It marks the end of a positioning trade rather than the start of one, and the price move tells you which side was closing.
This screen ranks every F&O stock by the percentage drop in its total futures open interest across all expiries in the latest session.
Open interest is summed across every listed expiry, so rollover from the expiring month into the next does not register as a drop.
Classification: price up with OI down is Short Covering; price down with OI down is Long Unwinding.
In expiry week some decline in total OI is normal as positions are closed rather than rolled.
FAQ
What does a fall in open interest mean?
Positions are being closed. If the price rose at the same time, short sellers were buying back (short covering); if it fell, long holders were selling out (long unwinding).
Why do many stocks lose OI near expiry?
Traders who do not roll their positions into the next month close them, so total open interest tends to fall in the days before expiry.
How often does the list update?
Every trading session once the end-of-day F&O data is processed.
